Screenshot 2024-11-26 at 11.09.55 AMTechnological progress has provided global access to products and services over the last few decades. All tools, however simple or complex, can potentially be used for nefarious purposes. Technology connects humans in ways that didn’t exist 20 or more years ago; our various interconnected devices are also potential channels for hackers. One of the growing threats to cybersecurity in IoT is sim-jacking or sim-swapping. In this blog, we cover the basics of a SIM card, what SIM jacking is, the risks of it, and how to avoid it altogether.

2. Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations for EVs: Guidelines & Opportunities

canada-ev-ScreenshotIn 2023, Canada surpassed a critical threshold: five percent of new car sales now consist of vehicles powered only by electricity. While EVs contribute to many benefits for users – fuel cost savings, lower maintenance, and better performance – one of the biggest is their small environmental footprint. Electric vehicles produce less greenhouse gas emissions than average gasoline-powered vehicles. Canada introduced their Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) program which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels and encourages the growth of clean energy.

3. Improve Rider Engagement to Drive Equity in Public Transportation

rider-engagement-ScreenshotCommunity engagement stimulates early and ongoing involvement and suggests diverse values in the transportation decision-making process. When riders feel heard and engaged, they are more likely to become advocates for public transit, therefore creating a more accessible and efficient system for everyone in the area. The Department of Transportation defines “meaningful public involvement” as full representation from the community, where the process considers public comments and incorporates that feedback into a project, program, or plan. By engaging with these communities, transit networks can better understand the needs of riders – such as expanding service routes, increasing frequency, and offering reduced fares.

Honorable Mention: Bridging the Gap Between Telehealth & Mental Health

Connected healthcare has helped bridge the gap between the need of mental health services and lack of accessible in-person care due to either geographical distance, time constraints, physical limitations, and/or stigma associated with seeking therapy. According to a study published by KFF and Epic Research, a high share of patients (55 percent) in rural areas relied on connected healthcare to receive mental health and substance use services compared to those in urban areas (35 percent). Telehealth has served as a major resource among vulnerable populations – children and the elderly being the leading ones. Expanding access to pediatric healthcare and cultivating community for our seniors is crucial for bridging the gap between telehealth and mental health.
